So sorry to hear this news. I will be praying for your swift and complete recovery. You are an important voice in the fight to save our wildlife and we need you more now than ever. Continue your fight, rest up, take time for yourself and Mary and please consider getting back into the fight when you are better.
I have missed you, your writing, your photography, and you and Mary in my life. Advocacy takes focus, dedication, and lots of work. As my Major Depression looms over my being, I, too, find it difficult to concentrate and devote the time and energy, especially with the wolf issues in my home state of Colorado. I have backed off, but I swore I would never give up on trying to save wolves. I have not received the cancer diagnosis but know so many people that have. I can only imagine what it must be like and I understand your need to back off so you can take care of yourself and heal. Take care my friend and I will keep you in my prayers and thoughts.
Thanks, Jeanne, for sharing about depression and for your years of support and fighting for wildlife and wild lands. You have always been a person that I knew would take action and advocate. I understand your needing to back off and I wish you the best in your struggles.
I have missed you and your writings - and your love for The Wild. 🐾
I am not sure how I first got into contact with your book on Amazon - maybe it was fate - but I was invested in the wolves during that time...more so thanks to you ♥️
I know you have love around you to battle the negative bastards that make up those cancer cells 😉 ...so I am sending you lot of love and laughter!
Thanks, Amanda, for your support over the years and for all you've done to fight for wolves. And thanks for sending me lots of love and laughter. I can use both.
Thank you for sharing your struggles with your cancer. You’re doing the right thing by taking care of yourself during this time. You have done so much for wildlife now it’s time to take care of you.
Sending healing to you and I hope you feel better soon.
Thanks, Karin, for your warm wishes. And thanks, too, for your years of fighting for wildlife and wild lands. I always counted on your support. Best wishes to your brother in his battle with cancer.
I know you don’t know me but I sure know you and have followed your work for years ! I have your autographed books which I cherish very much! I’m sorry to hear this news and I wish nothing but good health and healing for you . You have done tremendous work on behalf of wolves and made such a difference! You have lead a life that most of us dream of. Thank You from the bottom of my heart. Now focus on YOU ..
Kathy, thank you for your heartfelt comment. And thanks for your support by buying and enjoying my books. While we haven't met in person, you've touched my heart today.
Hi Rick. I missed your last email somehow (I got a new phone and discovered, to my horror, that I’ve lost ALL emails for the last 15 years, at least. All my folders are empty despite backing up everything before switching.) so reading this caught me way off guard. I’m sorry you’re dealing with all of this and the sequellae that is often attendant to a cancer diagnosis. Your voice and perspective is so unique among wildlife advocates that you will be truly missed! I count myself so lucky to have had a number of wonderful interactions with you and to have several of your books. Taking care of yourself and your needs is the top priority … I’m learning, slowly, that we can’t be effective for others if we don’t take care of ourselves first. I will hold you in my heart always as a treasured “co-conspirator” in trying to make the world a better place for wildlife and wish you nothing but love on this new journey you and Mary find yourselves on. ❤️❤️❤️
Thanks, Ali, for your support over the years and your kind words and good wishes today. I will also hold you in my heart as a treasured co-conspirator. Thanks for all you've done.
I just received your email, Rick. Sorry to hear about the battle, or maybe I should say, war you're fighting. I love you, my brother, and my prayers go out for you This one thing I know. in the end WE WIN!
I saw your previous post on Facebook. I am so happy you reached out and shared what you have been going through! I have been worried about you! You have been such an inspiration through your writings and your books and I have truly enjoyed all your writings and all your advocacy for our beloved wildlife! I will keep you in my warm thoughts and daily prayers! I expect you are going to beat this and one day we will find you back on social media with some more awesome adventures. Until then you are in my prayers♥️
Thanks, Jane, for worrying about me and keeping me in your prayers and thoughts. I sure do hope to beat this one day and I will with the support of folks like you.
I really hope to see You one day fresh and healthy again . Life is sometimes terrifying us almost to death but then we people come back again and continue to live our lifes wider more strong and wise. Hope You all good things and luck with ewerything. Thank You for being You.
Thank you for your eloquent writing and advocacy for the wild places and wildlife that you love. I wish for you a complete recovery back to full health.
Rick, thank you for your brave example. I have always loved your decisiveness and clarity, both in your writing and your personal life. Writers write. And although this experience is clearly changing you, I believe that once you've successfully negotiated this new landscape we'll be hearing from you again. Until then, know that you have my fond regards and support.
Rick, My thoughts and prayers are with you. Like you, I too was diagnosed with cancer last year. Mine was bladder cancer. The emotional roller coaster has been a ride I have never experienced. I just went for another check yesterday and the nerves started days before. I’m sorry you’re giving up your passion, but I understand fully.
Thanks, Ted, for sharing your story about bladder cancer and its emotional roller coaster ride. I'm sure you have a good understanding of what I'm experiencing. I wish you all the best in your treatment and outcome.
Thank you for your writing, Rick, I’ve so enjoyed it over the years. Being a nature lover but living in southern Ontario, your keen observations, beautiful descriptive writing, knowledge and understanding of the natural world, and obvious love and appreciation of wild animals and lands has provided me with a joyful and inspiring connection to the beauty of the west and the struggles and successes of wildlife and wildlands advocates there. Take the time you need to focus your energies on your own health now. Your legacy will continue as your writing and advocacy have inspired so many.
Thanks, Shannon, for your kind words about my observations, writing, knowledge and understanding of the natural world. I'm so glad that all of that came through and brought you joy and connection.

I'm sorry to hear this Rick. My brother's going through it too.
Check out Dr. Neal Barnard - he's done work with prostate CA and it might lead you down other paths of nutrition, wellness etc.
I'll miss your writing but I completely understand.
Enjoy your outdoor adventures with Mary, even if they aren't like they used to be.... it's still beauty at it's finest.
Warm wishes to you both!
