I so many times think of the relationship between dogs and wolves. I see some mannerisms in my dogs that I see in wolves! They definately need to be protected under the ESA and I will never quit fighting for them! Excellent article! I will never understand the hatred for such a wonderful creature!

I agree with you, Jane. If the anti-wolf folks gave wolves even half the credit they give their dogs, we wouldn't be in a war against wolves. Thank you for speaking for wolves and committing to continuing.

Regarding "We should protect them under the Endangered Species Act so their tiny population can grow in safety," I sure hope people discuss this with their family, friends, co-workers, city/town/county council members, and state and federal legislators, plus sign petitions and submit comments at each opportunity.

I share your hope as well, Deedee. In our world, wolves have no voice. It falls to each of us to speak for them, acknowledge their value, and get them protected.

Many times when I look at my dog I am thankful not only for him, but for his wolf ancestors. I can’t understand the hate some have for such beautiful creatures that give us so much.

I agree with you, Gail. There is a huge disconnect between our society's worship of dogs and hatred for wolves.

The description of how wolves and humans cooperated and befriended one another is similar to the Anishinabe story of how human man and maengun (wolf in the Ojibwe language) became brothers.

Thanks, Dr. Porter, for sharing that insight about the wolf and the Ojibwe tribe. I appreciate learning about it.

Thank you for sharing Rick. I loved the read. Once upon a time wolves, or to give it it's Irish name mactire, son of the land, were honoured here in Ireland, The Romans called Ireland Wolfland.

Hi Rae, thanks for adding that interesting info to this discussion. Do you think that wolves will ever be reintroduced in Ireland?

There is a sanctuary in Donegal which has recently opened with several wolves. Other counties I don't really think so - well for now. Can I say thank you for this newsletter I am finding it interesting and informative.

"Ancient wolves, for hundreds of thousands of years, dogged herds of caribou that migrated between what is now Spain and Siberia."

I just love the verb "dogged" being used here! Great article, Rick.

Thanks, Red, for your thoughtful observation. I smiled when I realized that dogged would work in that sentence.

I read all your books Rick. They are so informative, so well written and engaging and eye openers to a world that we sometimes ignore. How can I make a donation for the Wolves of Yellowstone?
