Rick, yet another vivid word picture of your experience in the wild! I loved the way the canoe brought you and Mary into intimate contact with that marsh. That fish had a heck of an abduction story to tell!

Beautiful article about a unique ecosystem. Reminded me of the book Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer. She speaks of similar places and also describes all of the uses for cattails. We live in an amazing world if we only stop to listen and learn. Thank you for sharing this experience about your listening, learning, and observing.

So cool that a man-made lake can become such a wonderland. That fish had the ride of its life...hope it survived. Thanks.

Paddling on a lake or river is like entering another world, a world in which we are silent observers. What a wonder you were able to behold and then recall as your time on the shore. I have paddled quiet sections of the Willamette River and enjoy a sense of peace and calm as I silently paddle past nests of ospreys and eagles as well as families of ducks on the river. What a lovely way to start the day with the memories of paddling the river.

Yes, Patricia, it is cool that this man-made lake had these wonderful rushes and their wildlife. It's also known for good fishing.

Hi Judy. I'm glad that the story brought back such fond memories. Mary and I, having lived 36 years in Corvallis, have paddled the Willamette and share your sense of peace and calm while doing so.
