Rick - I've been reading and enjoying your Love the Wild posts for awhile now but have never commented before. Bison are one of my favorite animals in Yellowstone. I never tire of watching them and never mind if I get caught up in a bison jam. This piece you wrote is beautiful and touching and shows the respect and reverence you feel for this wild animal. My husband and I have spent the last four summers hosting the USFS Colter Campground outside the NE entrance to the Park. Nearly every morning we go into the Park very early to look for wildlife. We never go the speed limit when it is dark. I wish that the night time speed limit was at least 10 mph slower.

Rick, I always enjoy your articles, but this piece, A Bison's Last Ride, touched my heart in a special way. Yesterday I was in tears when I read that the horrible, mean Montana Governor had killed a mountain lion that had ventured outside the park boundaries. What a contrast from you kind, thoughtful encounter with the dead bison. You respected the dead bison, shared a reverent moment, and proceeded to move the bison where other animals could dine on this beautiful, young animal. As you left the bison you whispered an invitation to the scavengers; thank the bison for providing them sustenance, and then you left. This article softened my heart to the realization that a they are many kind, thoughtful, good people in the world. You are a true example of one of those people. Joanne Kendrick

I’ve always loved this piece, Rick. Thank you for posting it. I’m struck by the way you capture the details, as well as the larger cycles of death and rebirth, even when they involve oblivious humans.

Death can be such a sad thing especially when the victim is young. However one must remember that the circle of life is beautiful as it maintains and sustains in many ways. Thank you Rick for your wonderful adventures in Yellowstone! Kristina Watt

This was a beautiful circle of life story with one terrible element. Vehicles kill so many animals. There should be some way to control them. So sad. Thank you for the reverence.
