This short slideshow with accompanying music celebrates fall’s arrival, the daily changes, and what lies ahead in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. You’ll see forested slopes transformed into vibrant patchworks of green, gold, orange, and red. You’ll see megafauna: grizzly, wolf, elk, bison. And minifauna: porcupine, ducks, native bees. You’ll see flowers gone to seed as others continue to blossom. You’ll see raindrops and rainbows, reflecting lakes and cascading rivers, intense sun and harvest moon, and finally snowflakes as fall gives way to winter. (We have 9” of snow on the ground in our backyard this morning.)
The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem is huge. Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks hold the center and are surrounded by national forests, wilderness, national wildlife refuges, as well as BLM and tribal lands. The GYE is also wild, showcasing today most of the same plants and animals as when our ancient ancestors arrived here ten thousand or more years ago.
Mary and I are fortunate to live next to Yellowstone’s north entrance. We can experience the GYE in all seasons and we love fall. We hope you take a few moments and join us in enjoying fall in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.
Thanks for joining me in this Love the Wild! If you haven’t yet subscribed, I hope you’ll do so. It’s free and brings a Love the Wild letter to your inbox each week. In addition to slide shows such as this one, you’ll enjoy stories inspired by photos, a variety of podcasts, photo essays, opinion pieces, excerpts from my books, and more. With each, I hope to warm your heart and excite your mind as we share moments with wildlife and in wild lands.
I write, speak, and photograph to protect wildlife and preserve wild lands. My bestselling In the Temple of Wolves; its sequel, Deep into Yellowstone; and its prequel, The Wilds of Aging are available signed. My books are also available on Amazon unsigned or as eBook or audiobook.
